I am currently using my new laptop and my downloads speeds are about 300kb/s whereas on my main pc it is usually at least 800kb/s?

I am using a wireless router which is downstairs located in my pc, is this normal for my laptop to have downloads this slow?

Is there a way to speed them up?

I have a PC; my wife has a mac. My pc (Gateway tablet) is new; her mac i-book is almost 2 years old. We have a wireless network at home, and her mac is about 10x faster than my pc. Also, if my powercord is not plugged in and I am running on battery power, my pc is even slower.

Is there anything I can do (short of scrapping the Gateway) to speed up my connection? Also, why is my pc so much slower when running on battery power, and can I fix that?
